OTB Game Analysis 6

Another lucky victory

This is my round 6 game from my recent OTB tournament. After a bad start, I managed to recover with two draws where I felt that I played well and my opponent for this round was in last place, so I felt confident that I could win.

The game

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5

When playing this game, I didn't know what to play in this line

6...Nbd7 7.Be2

My opponent also doesn't play a challenging continuation

7...e6 8.O-O Be7 9.Kh1 Qc7 10.f4 h6 11.Bh4 Nxe4??

I thought I had seen everything but missed one very strong move for white. 11...O-O would have been simple and strong.

White to play

During the game I saw the following line: 12.Bxe7? Nxc3 13.Bxd6 Qxd6 14.bxc3 I evaluated it to be better for black which is ture but white can play a better 12th move
12.Nxe6! fxe6 13.Bh5+ Kf8 14.Bxe7+ Kxe7 15.Nxe4 White is much better

12.Nxe4?? Bxh4 13.Nxe6?!

Now this sacrifice comes to late, but it's still difficult for black in a practical game

13...fxe6 14.Nxd6+?

Black to play

14...Kf8?

14...Ke7! (I didn't consider this move during the game since keeping the king in the center looks dangerous to me. However, in the game, my rook on h8 was out of the game and my king also wasn't safe on g8) 15.Ne4 Rd8 16.Bd3 Nf6

15.f5 Nf6

15...e5 16.Qd5 Nf6 17.Qxe5 Qe7 18.Nc4 Bd7 19.Qxe7+ Kxe7 20.g3 Bg5

16.Rf4

I missed this move during the game

16...Bg5 17.Rc4 Qd8 (17...Qd7? 18.Nxc8) 18.Rxc8?!

I felt that these exchanges only helped black
18. Rd4 e5 19. Rd3 Qe7

18...Rxc8 19.Nxc8 Qxc8 20.Qd6+

Black to play

20...Kg8

I didn't really consider any other moves during the game but the engine gives the following line: 20...Kf7! 21.fxe6+ Qxe6 22.Qc7+ Kf8 23.Bd3 and the engine says that black has the advantage

21.fxe6 Ne4 22.Qd5 Qc6 23.Qf5

Black to play

In this position, I thought for over 20 minutes over my next move since I saw that white could force a draw after my next move but I didn't feel confident enough to continue the game.

The engine says that black is better after the following line: 23...Nd6! 24.Qg6 Qe8 and white has to trade queens or give up the e6-pawn.

23...Qxc2

After playing this move, I was waiting for my opponent to play 24.Qf7+ Kh7 25.Qf5+ with a draw. However, after only a few minutes, my opponent played a different move to my surprise.

24.Bh5?? Ng3+ 25.hxg3 Qxf5 0-1

Conclusion

Just like in the last game, I got lucky to win the game. Overall, this was probably my worst tournament but I am happy that I could end with 2 wins. I have also learned a lot from my losses
